About DeSoto Falls
DeSoto Falls is located along Frogtown Creek in Chattahoochee National Forest. The falls are actually named after Hernando DeSoto, which is a Spanish explorer that passed through the area in the late 16th century. Legends have it that his armor was found in that area.
Keep in mind that DeSoto Falls share the name with a much smaller waterfall in DeSoto State Park, Alabama, which is also named after the same explorer.
DeSoto Falls consists of two beautiful cascading waterfalls in addition to a relatively smaller one that is several feet away, called Upper, Middle, and Lower DeSoto Waterfalls.
The upper waterfall is the largest, dropping 200 ft while the middle and lower ones drop 67 and 35 ft respectively.

DeSoto Falls Trail
DeSoto Falls are located at the end of the DeSoto Falls trail, which is a relatively easy out-and-back trail stretching over a relatively small distance of 2.2 miles.
The trail is relatively easy to cross with moderate elevation and boasts some amazing scenery of beautiful rhododendrons, which makes it suitable for all the family.
The beginning of the hiking trail is paved and easy to cross with plenty of areas and tables to enjoy a quick picnic.
You’ll then cross a wooden bridge above the creek and then go upstream by taking left to reach the lower falls and then towards the middle and upper ones.
DeSoto Falls Recreation Area
The DeSoto Falls Recreation Area is located near the trailhead. The place is open all day long but requires a previous reservation through the National Recreation Reservation Service.
The location is an excellent campground with plenty of campsites to enjoy your time fishing or camping. The nearby water bodies are also a hotspot for trout fishing.
It’s also suitable for both a weekend trip as well as a short picnic (the campground features picnic tables, a grill, and other regular amenities.)
